How we verify gambling licences

We read the regulator's own register files, keep a dated snapshot, and compare each new snapshot with the last one. A licence fact on Kompanion is never older than the snapshot date shown next to it, and a change in licence status appears only after an editor has confirmed it on the official record.

The UK import, step by step

  1. Fetch. Download the four files the UK Gambling Commission publishes: businesses, licences, domain names, trading names.
  2. Normalise. Group licence rows by licence number, keep status per activity, lower-case domains, keep dates as the register gives them.
  3. Compare. Diff against the previous snapshot: new or removed businesses, renamed entities, new, changed or removed licence activities, domains and trading names.
  4. Route. New domains and trading names are recorded with the qualifier "declared by the business". Status changes, removals and renames go to the review queue.
  5. Review. An editor checks each queued change on the official record before the update is merged into the site.
  6. Publish and log. Profiles show the snapshot date and the next check date; every change is kept in a change log.

The first import is the baseline, so it records no changes.

How the counts on our pages are made

  • Businesses with an active licence: accounts with at least one activity in status Active.
  • Active licences by type: licence numbers with at least one Active activity, by Remote, Non-Remote or Ancillary Remote.
  • Active remote licences by activity: Active activity rows under Remote licences.
  • Consumer-facing remote licence: an Active Remote activity of Casino, Bingo, Pool Betting or General Betting.

These are Kompanion's counts of the Commission's files, not figures the Commission publishes.

What a register check cannot tell you

  • Whether a website really belongs to the licensee: domains are declared by the business.
  • Which group owns the licensee.
  • Whether the operator complies with its licence conditions day to day.
  • Anything about markets other than the regulator's own.

A valid licence is not a quality rating. Profiles never call an operator "reliable" or "unreliable" on the strength of a licence alone.
