This page helps you work out which assistance may suit you and who grants it. Detailed conditions for each program are on separate pages.
What assistance is there, and where do you apply?
The reception system helps people without means who have just arrived; the minimum living income helps those who have lived in Spain for more than a year and have a low income; unemployment benefit helps those who have worked. The program and the body that grants it depend on your situation:
| Situation | Assistance | Who grants it |
|---|---|---|
| Just arrived, no money or housing | Reception system: housing, food, later help with rent | Ministry of Inclusion through CREADE centers and organizations in the provinces |
| Low income, more than a year of legal residence | Minimum living income (Ingreso Mínimo Vital) and the child supplement | National Social Security Institute (INSS); in Catalonia, the Basque Country and Navarre, regional bodies |
| Low income, regional conditions met | Regional minimum income | Autonomous community |
| Worked and lost your job | Contributory unemployment benefit or unemployment subsidy | Public employment service SEPE |
| Retirement age | Contributory or non-contributory pension | INSS; non-contributory pensions are granted by the autonomous communities |
| Other difficult situations | Needs assessment and local programs | Municipal social services at your registered address |
Does temporary protection entitle you to benefits?
Not in itself. Temporary protection gives access to social assistance when a person lacks means, and to Social Security benefits on general terms. Each program is granted only if its own requirements on income, length of residence or contribution record are met.
