This page is about money in Spain: your account, deposit protection and transfers to Ukraine. For the affairs you still have in Ukraine, our general guides will help.
What do you need to know about accounts, deposits and transfers?
Everyone who resides legally in the EU is entitled to a basic account, bank deposits are guaranteed up to €100,000, and transfers to Ukraine are international because Ukraine is not part of SEPA.
- Account. Everyone who resides legally in the EU, as well as asylum applicants, is entitled to a basic payment account. We explain how to open one on a separate page.
- Deposit guarantee. The Deposit Guarantee Fund covers up to €100,000 per depositor at one bank, however many accounts they have there. Money held with electronic money institutions and payment institutions is not covered by this fund.
- Transfers to Ukraine. According to the European Payments Council list of December 2025, Ukraine is not part of the SEPA area. A transfer from Spain to Ukraine is international, so the terms and fees differ from those of transfers within the EU.
